DESIGN STUDIO 4

FURNITURE FOR AN ELDERLY

In this assignment, in a group of 3, we had to visit an elderly centre in PJ. The aim of this was to interview an elderly person and to find out his/her daily life in the centre. After that, we had to propose a furniture that suits her for her daily activity in the centre. This was the first time that I was designing a furniture as we had to do a lot of research on the ergonomics and to be sensitive as our client is a senior.

Site Analysis

Our site was located at PJS 7, which is a 10 minute-walk from the University. The site is a suburban area where it's population is mostly elderly and students. In a group of 12, we had to gather data from the site and come up with an analysis from contexua, macro and micro data, weather aspects, noise, wind, sun paths etc. What I learned from this was teamwork as we were in a big group and also data gathering from books, online etc. to design the elderly centre which goes with its context.

As a reflection, I learnt that having to know the issues of the users are essential before designing a building. Also having to know the ergonomics and user needs for the users' comfort is important too. For me, time management is the most important aspects as I was struggling during this semester.
