Project 1
Auditorium: A Case Study on Acoustics Design
In a group of 7 people, we were assigned to study the acoustics design of a local auditorium - which we picked Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (KLPAC). Before the visit to KLPAC, we had a tour to the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra. After that, the team headed to KLPAC to collect data on acoustics design such as materiality, acoustics furnitures and panels etc. We had to propose an observe and report case study.
Here are the list of the tasks:
i. Drawings of the auditorium (floor layout, significant sections).
ii. Historical background.
iii. Sound absorption materials used.
iv. Sound source (in the auditorium).
v. Sound path (in the auditorium).
vi. Compile information into a report.
Reflection
Throughout this project, I've learned the basics of sound and its properties, and the design acoustics of an auditorium. It also has opened my eyes on the importance of a controlled acoustics in an auditorium for the comfort of the users. As a group project, it strengthens my teamwork and communication skill.
Project 2
Lighting Integration Project
For project 2, it is an integration project with Design Studio 5 where it studies on the lighting analysis of my community library at Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman (Jalan TAR). After proposing the design of the library, we were to chose 2 spaces to make an analysis on its daylight factor and how to apply and arrange artificial lighting depending on the lighting of the spaces.
We were to produce to followings throughout this project:
i. A brief site analysis.
ii. Overall floor plan (1:100 scale).
iii. Floor plans of Space A & B.
iv. Sections of Space A & B.
v. Reflected ceiling plans.
vi. Lighting contours.
vii. Types of lamps to be used.
viii. To determine reflectance on walls, ceilings and floors.
ix. Daylighting calculations.
x. Lumen calculation methods.
xi. Lighting design proposal.
Reflection:
Throughout this project, I've learned the importance of natural lighting in a building. This is because more daylight could save energy thus making the building more efficient and sustainable. Libraries have their optimum temperatures and lighting conditions to preserve the books, therefore controlled lighting play an important role.
