COMMUNITY SERVICE INITIATIVE

E-JOURNAL

The group members gathered at Taylor's University Student Life Centre to discuss the initial idea on what to create. After the brainstorming session, we agreed upon helping the surau community by either renovating a certain spot or creating a suitable furniture that helps the everyday routine of the community in the surau. After the discussion, we head straight to Surau Al-Bukhary at PJS 7 to check on the condition of the place.

25 April 2017

Ash Wahab and Anwar Fauzi visited the surau to ask the people in charge (imams) about the project after Friday prayers but later was given to a no answer. They then head to another location which was in Kota Kemuning, Shah Alam and found it was very promising as it has an Islamic School which suits with the function of our furniture. After the trip, we then gathered in Taylor's University to further discuss on plans to continue to design and build the table, finding the right resources for the materials, and the construction methods.

26 May 2017

We continued the day on trying to find wooden pallets around Sunway area but it was unsuccessful due to the fact that most of the wooden pallets are broken and none of the factory was able to give us their pallets because they are using them to recycle.

29 May 2017

We then headed straight to the industrial area in Shah Alam to ask permissions on taking their wooden pallets from their factories. Fortunately, they were some pallets in good condition and we managed to get them for free. After that, we brought it back to PJS 7 to continue for disassembly.

31 May 2017

We gathered tools such as hammer, crowbar, sandpaper and nails to start on the disassembling of the wooden pallets. We cut the pallets into 45mm x 43mm for the seats and was forced to buy some wood planks as the planks we took were damp and unusable for seating.

1 June 2017

Measuring and cutting planks. Nailing them together to form seats.

3 June 2017

Buying shellac brushes and screws to paint and screw them together. Applied shellac onto the seats and left to dry.

4 June 2017

Removed two wooden blocks for space and applied shellac to the table itself.

5 June 2017

We got nails, wheels and plywood. Turned out that we chose the wrong size of the plywood. After managing to find nails for the whole day, we joined both the wheels for extra mobility and the two wooden pallets together by nailing them, and drilling.

6 June 2017

Getting the correct size of plywood - mounting and nailing it on top of the table to create a more stable table. After that we tested on the durability of the wheels installed. Later we touched up the furniture with more shellac to give it a nicer finish. We bought cushion for the seats earlier during the day and tested them out on comfortability.

7 June 2017

This was the day that we shipped the table to Surau Al-Hijrah, Kota Kemuning, Shah Alam. We had a slight problem that none of our cars can fit the furnitures so that we called on a friend to help us bring the furniture to the surau and it was successful after a short journey there. After Zohor prayers, we asked around on the local community there about our furniture. We asked ustaz, children and adults. After multiple feedbacks, we gathered information to continue on our boards and videos. The furniture is then stored in the surau for further usage of the surau community.
